Word document size increases dramatically when add a linked document

Does anyone have any idea why my document increases in
size from around 70k to 526k when I link a document that
is only 70k in size? I need to link our templates to our
letterhead so that I do not have to update hundreds of
templates everytime something changes. It works
beautifully with a linked document but there is no way
that I can have hundreds and hundreds of letters taking
up a 526K or so when they should only taken 70-100K. Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Any graphics in the document? Are "versions" being saved?

There is a small graphic that is in the original document
where the total document size is only 70k. Where do you
check to see if "versions" are being saved?

Bob - I did look at the "versions" under "File" and the
box "Automatically save a version on close" is NOT
checked.
