Word document will not open anymore

Hello all,

I have been working on a file for months and all seemed fine. Even switching
between Windows 2000 / 2003 and 2007 (due to different PCs at work and at
home) has never caused any issues. But last week, after inserting a jpeg
graph and saving the document none of the word versions nor OpenOffice will
open the document.

I am receiving the following error message:

Word experienced an error trying to open the file.
Try these suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive
*Makes sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space
*Open the file with the text recovery converter.

Your help on this would be much appreciated as this is a very important file.

Thanks!
Eric

Have you tried Open and Repair or "Recover Text from Any File"? Note,
however, that that particular error message is often bogus and irrelevant.

I had a similar problem just yesterday. A Word 2007 document I had been
working on for a week would not open, giving the same message you describe.
None of the repair/restore/recover fixes were working, and I had about
resigned myself to having to recreate 5 hours of work. I went to our IT guy,
and pointed him to the corrupt document, and it opened perfectly for him. He
actually doesn't have 2007 on his machine, but has 2003 with the 2007
converter add in. He saved it for me in a couple of versions, and I've been
able to continue my work. But I still can't open the original corrupt file,
even though I've "repaired" my Office 2007 installation.

I have no idea how or why he was able to open a *.docx file with 2003 plus
converter, whereas I cannot open it with native 2007, but its a fact. Just a
thought if you've not come up with a solution on your own yet.

Thanks for the info WhiteRat, it seems that maybe there is hope. Although I
tried 3 different versions of Word including 2003 I'll give this another try.
Do you know which version of 2003 was successful?
