On highlighting a doc. file and right-clicking it, I found the "default
program". I clicked it and the box "Open With" appeared. In the box
was
"Recommended Programs". In the top left-hand corner of the
"Recommended
Programs" is a small blue-shaded box with a Microsoft Logo. Under the
Logo
in this box was "Media Center".
Adjacent to the blue box is a Microsoft Office Word icon, and below the
blue
box is a WordPad icon.
:
Don't right-click on the program icon. Go into Windows Explorer and
find
one
of your .doc files. Right-click on that.

"Right-click the icon of the file that needs a new parent program.
From
the
shortcut menu, choose Open With." I did this, but couldn't see an
"Open
With". There was only an "Open" command, and this brought up a new
blank
WordPad document. (The icon I right-clicked on was the WordPad
icon.)

:
I know how to change file associations in Win XP, let me see if I
can
find
out how to do it in Vista..........
"Right-click the icon of the file that needs a new parent program.
From
the
shortcut menu, choose Open With.
If you choose "Choose default program" from the submenu, or if
there's
no
submenu at all, the new Open With dialog box appears. It's supposed
to
list
every program on your machine that's capable of opening the
document."
(In
your case select Word)
"And now, a critical question: Are you trying to make this document
only
open in a different program? Or all documents of this type?
If it's just this one, click OK and stop reading. If it's all
files
of
this
type, then also turn on "Always use the selected program to open
this
kind
of file" and click OK."
(I basically copied that from "Windows Vista - The Missing Manual"
by
Pogue
Press.)

The new computer has Vista, and the old one Windows.

Does this new computer have Vista or Windows? (Your original

is a
bit
confusing.)

How to ask a question

Thank you for your reply, JoAnne.
In Word XP Office on my old computer, my files and folders
were
in
document
form and not in WordPad form. I didn't have Works Suite on
this
old
computer.
My new computer does have Works Suite, however, and this is
where
my
documents from the old computer have ended up. What I want to
do
is
transfer
the Works Word WordPad documents to Office 07 in a regular
document
format
rather than in a WordPad format.
Your suggestion baffles me, though not because it is wrong.
I'm
baffled
because you gave me the general directions without the
specific
step-by-step
procedures to accomplish it. I'm a novice, you see.
Might you do this for me, please. Thanks.
Mal
:
You've got several things mixed up. Vista and Windows are
operating
systems
that do not have a word processor. Office and Works Suite are
collections
of
programs that do contain word processors. Okay, that's enough
school
for
the
day. ;-)
If you had Works and now have Word 2007, try copying your
files
over
to
your
hard drive (do not open them on the disk!) and then open them
in
Word.
Save
them and you're good to go.

How to ask a question
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/555375
My new computer has Windows Vista Home Premium, and my old
computer
had
Windows Office XP . I copied some Word files and folders
from
XP
Office
to
a
CD. When I installed the files and folders in my new
computer,
they
showed
up
as Wordpad documents in Microsoft Vista Works Word
Processor.
I
then
installed Windows Office Word 07. I want to convert the
copied
files
from
Microsoft Works Word (WordPad file association) to
Microsoft
Office
(Word
doc. file association), so that I might use the old Windows
XP
files
and
folders in Vista Office Word 07. How might I accomplish
this?
