Word document & Works WordPad

M

Mal

My new computer has Windows Vista Home Premium, and my old computer had
Windows Office XP . I copied some Word files and folders from XP Office to a
CD. When I installed the files and folders in my new computer, they showed up
as Wordpad documents in Microsoft Vista Works Word Processor. I then
installed Windows Office Word 07. I want to convert the copied files from
Microsoft Works Word (WordPad file association) to Microsoft Office (Word
doc. file association), so that I might use the old Windows XP files and
folders in Vista Office Word 07. How might I accomplish this?

You've got several things mixed up. Vista and Windows are operating systems
that do not have a word processor. Office and Works Suite are collections of
programs that do contain word processors. Okay, that's enough school for the
day. ;-)

If you had Works and now have Word 2007, try copying your files over to your
hard drive (do not open them on the disk!) and then open them in Word. Save
them and you're good to go.

Thank you for your reply, JoAnne.

In Word XP Office on my old computer, my files and folders were in document
form and not in WordPad form. I didn’t have Works Suite on this old computer.
My new computer does have Works Suite, however, and this is where my
documents from the old computer have ended up. What I want to do is transfer
the Works Word WordPad documents to Office 07 in a regular document format
rather than in a WordPad format.

Your suggestion baffles me, though not because it is wrong. I’m baffled
because you gave me the general directions without the specific step-by-step
procedures to accomplish it. I’m a novice, you see.

Might you do this for me, please. Thanks.

I know how to change file associations in Win XP, let me see if I can find
out how to do it in Vista..........

"Right-click the icon of the file that needs a new parent program. From the
shortcut menu, choose Open With.

If you choose "Choose default program" from the submenu, or if there's no
submenu at all, the new Open With dialog box appears. It's supposed to list
every program on your machine that's capable of opening the document." (In
your case select Word)

"And now, a critical question: Are you trying to make this document only
open in a different program? Or all documents of this type?

If it's just this one, click OK and stop reading. If it's all files of this
type, then also turn on "Always use the selected program to open this kind
of file" and click OK."

(I basically copied that from "Windows Vista - The Missing Manual" by Pogue
Press.)

If the old files were created by Word as Word documents they are still Word
documents whatever the registry may identify them as and Word will open them
from file > open. The versions of Word in Office and Works Suite are
operationally the same and produce the same type of file format.

Normally repairing Word should fix its registry entries to correct file
associations, but if for some reason it has not done so, you need to
associate DOC files with Word rather than WordPad. JoAnn has explained how
to do this.

On highlighting a doc. file and right-clicking it, I found the “default

"Right-click the icon of the file that needs a new parent program.

If you choose "Choose default program" from the submenu, or if there's
no
submenu at all, the new Open With dialog box appears. It's supposed to

your case select Word)

Thank you for your reply, JoAnne.

In Word XP Office on my old computer, my files and folders were
in
document
form and not in WordPad form. I didn't have Works Suite on this
old
computer.
My new computer does have Works Suite, however, and this is where
my
documents from the old computer have ended up. What I want to do
is
transfer
the Works Word WordPad documents to Office 07 in a regular
document
format
rather than in a WordPad format.

Your suggestion baffles me, though not because it is wrong. I'm
baffled
because you gave me the general directions without the specific
step-by-step
procedures to accomplish it. I'm a novice, you see.

Might you do this for me, please. Thanks.

Mal

:

You've got several things mixed up. Vista and Windows are
operating
systems
that do not have a word processor. Office and Works Suite are
collections
of
programs that do contain word processors. Okay, that's enough
school
for
the
day. ;-)

If you had Works and now have Word 2007, try copying your files
over
to
your
hard drive (do not open them on the disk!) and then open them in
Word.
Save
them and you're good to go.

Wonderful, JoAnn. I can now access in doc. form all of my folders and files
that used to show up in WordPad format.

I'm grateful to you for your patient and kind assistance in solving my
