Word documents become password protected

I have two separate instances where people have created
documents and when they go to open them later, they are
password protected. They have no idea how it happened or
even that they could do that. I was wondering if there
is a bug or a update that needs to be applied or if there
is anything I can do about it. Thanks in advance. Word
2000.

Hi Matt,

I seem to recall a virus that exhibited this behavior. When is the
last time you updated your virus scanner and preformed a full scan on
all files?

Once a virus is ruled out then create a new document and password
protect it. Then compare the password dialog boxes. Are they the same?
