Word documents continued to number higher even after word is close

Word documents continued to number higher even after word is closed or CPU is
shut off. Such as Document1.doc, Document2.doc...Document32.doc. The CPU
could be shut down prior to document 10 but when Word is started up again the
next new document that is opend would start with 10 then 11 and so forth.
What causes this problem

What version of Word are you using, and what operating system?

When you say that the CPU is shut off, are you actually doing a shut down of
Windows?

The reason I ask...

If Word is being used by Outlook, it can remain open, albeit hidden, even
after you think you close it. And *if* you're hibernating or standing by,
rather than shutting down, then to Windows, it can appear that Word never
does actually get closed. Thus, the numbering continues.

If you are actually shutting down Windows completely, then I'd suspect that
this is a registry corruption problem.

The other thing... Word documents don't actually acquire an extension until
you save them. In my version of Word, if I save a Document1 window, the
default name is Doc1.doc, not Document1.doc. So, having extensions attached
to the Document1, Document2, etc. files seems odd.
