Word documents disapear with a save error...

When saving a document located on the server from one of
the clients an error message pops up telling the user that
there is something wrong with the disk where he or she is
trying to save the document. At the same time the network
connection is getting the red X on it as if it wasnt
accesible, which it is, when accesing it from explorer.

Thats when the real problem reveals itself, the document
you were trying to save is now gone. Its not on the server
or anywhere to be found on the local machine.
The event log shows nothing that can help me with this
problem, both server and client log is checked for the
specific time when it occours. The disk on the server
looks fine. Other shares on the same disk doesnt seem to
be affected.

This problem has occured 7 - 8 times in a couple of weeks
and my custommers are not to happy with it.

They are running a SBS2000 server, Windows 2000
professional desktops and Office2000.
Uppdated antivirus software is running on all the
computers in the network.

Hope that someone out there has seen or experinced this
and can give me some tips on how to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

Not an expert, but;
Can the user save to the local machine?
Is Word the only app so affected?
Does the user have permission to write to the network drive?

Is this just happening to 1 user? If so, it sounds like a dodgy network
connection or NIC in the workstation. If this is happening to several users,
what SP has been install on the Windows 2000 Server?

Hi Rob,
There is no problem saving localy.
So far word is the only app affected.
It doesnt seem to be a permission problem.

thanks!

Hi Terry,
The problem has occured on 2 workstations now, there is SP
4 on the workstations and SP3 on the server, i wont
install sp 4 on the server cause it messes with the RRAS.

My suspicions are that there are a network error, the
server has a Gbit lan card and there are some old switches
at their place, so switching one of them will be my next
step.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, the problem is probably SP3 on the server. SP3 turned on SMB
packet signing - something that has been broken and was turned off in NT4
SP4. However, I have only seen and experienced real problems caused by the
SMB bug on Office XP workstations. However, your symptoms are so similar
that I am sure it is the root cause.

Hi Terry,
Thank you for following up on my problem, much
appreciated.

I will check into the SMB problem on SP3.
Im not sure i understand you completely, has the SMB
packet signing beeb turned off since sp4 for NT4? or did
you meen that its turned off with sp4 for windows2000? the
OS im running on this server?

This is the first time ive experieced this problem and i
have a lot of customers running similar configurations.
Do you know of any KB article that discusses this problem.

Thanks again for your time and help!

I should have been a little clearer. SMB packet signing was turned off by
default with the NT4 Server SP4 as it was broken. This stayed off until it
was inadvertently turned back on by default with Windows 2000 Server SP3.
That's what I meant to explain!

It causes really serious problems with Office XP. typically when a user
comes to save and close a document, the server reports that the file cannot
be found. The user then has the C+A+D to close Word. The document on the
server remains locked by the Windows locking file until that user logs off
the network. There are other symptoms, but that is the main and most serious
problem.

I am having the same problems with Word that you did when you could not save to the server. When I try, the application freezes up and says it is not responding. It started just recently and only Word is affected--however, I am using Word 97 in a Windows 2000 NT environment, not Word 2000 or whatever. I have removed and reinstalled the software and that didn't work. When I opened it after installing it, I noticed the list of previous files used reappeared--almost as if another word program--a rogue program--was running in the background. In excel, which has no problems, there was no prior history listed when I opened it

What did you do and did it work? I read the notes from TF

Thanks
