Word documents disappear

Kevin Kennelly

Looking for some help.
Lately when I press a delete key or apple key plus something, the document I
am working in disappears. To get it back I have to click on any other word
document open and then go to the Window menu and select the missing file and
it's window will reappear. Any thought?

What exactly do you mean by dissapearing?
My guess is whether you accidently did not change keyboardshortcuts.
Do you have any shortcuts in Word Assigned? You can go to
tools>customize>customize keyboard>reset all. This is to reset Word
shortcuts

The other place where System shortcuts are soted is
Preferences>mouse&keyboard>keyboardshortcuts.
It would be helpful if you know which key combination it does, then
you might reset just this keyboard shortcut rather then all shortcuts.

Also more information about OS/office would be helpful. Meanwhile keep
checking for other opinions...

My guess would be that you are triggering the Minimize command. This is
system-wide, and it shrinks the current document to a spot in the Dock.
Command-M is doing it here, and I believe that is probably a system
shortcut that all apps are supposed to respect (for whatever reason, the
apple key is called the command key).

You might also be triggering the system-wide Hide command, which hides
the current application and all open windows in it. The icon in the Dock
might become sorta grayed out (or that might be a customization on my
machine, not sure). Command-H is doing it here, and I believe that is
probably a system shortcut that all apps are supposed to respect.

If neither of those seem to be it, be sure to post responses to
little_creature's comments.

(for whatever reason, the apple key is called the command key).

There's an interesting story, by an authoritative author, at
http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Swedish_Campground.
txt&topic=Software%20Design -- albeit "Command" is mentioned throughout but
the origin of the name is only implied (as a generic term for a modifier
key, in the context described in this article).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_key also covers the Apple II origins of
the apple-on-the-key.

Consistent with the above, from personal recollection, which starts from
about 6 months after the first Mac was introduced, Apple's documentation has
always called it the "Command" key on the Mac.

Wouldn't it be good if Apple Inc. were to put "cmd" on the keys after all
this time?

Hmm, yes, it is off-topic...

Hi Daiya,
TX for adding, or could be Apple+W,which closes the window.

Sorry to take so long in replying. Many things are vying for my attention.
This is a reply to suggestions from little_creature, Clive, and Dalya.

I have reset the system shortcuts. I was trying to reset the
Tools/Customize/Customize Keyboard but could not figure out how to select
the reset all tab.

When I have done this it is only the window I am working on that disappears.
I will have to pay more attention to see what keys I have actually pressed
just before.

I will post again as soon as I know. Thank you so much for your patience
and feedback.
