Word documents fail to open in Word 2007

A new (odd) behavior just started in the last few days:
+ Double clicking on a Word document (.doc or .docx) opens Word 2007 with a
blank window (not a blank document)
+ Opening the same file from within Word 2007 -- will open the document but
it is locked and unusable
++ Cannot scroll
++ Cannot highlight text
++ Cannot copy or insert text - cursor is at the start of the document

I have un-installed Office 2007 and re-installed ... no change in behavior
I have re-installed the latest version of Document Compatibility

Opening Word Options ... all are grayed out (left side option list) except
the first item
This does NOT happen with Excel, PowerPoint or other Office files -- Only Word

Clearly something has gotten scrambled somewhere but we have been
unsuccessful finding any "template" or "default" file to kill it and start
over.

I am running into the same thing and reinstall and anything else I
have tried has not worked.
Anyone come up with a resolution?

We found the cause of my problem ... a 3rd party application (LaserFiche)
which was apparently tripping over some of the Office 2007 DLLs ... once
LaserFiche was uninstalled, behavior returned to normal.

I'm not having exactly the same thing happening but it takes forever to
launch word and then it takes for ever to open a file and sometimes it
doesn't open the file. Will your solution work for my problem too? If so,
how do I disable Office Plug-In in Norton Anti Virus. I have the Norton
Internet Security Package that came loaded with the computer.

Thanks for your help

Something like open NAV, choose Preferences, Advanced and clear the
checkbox. I can't give you the exact details because I wouldn't have
anything Norton in the house let alone on my computer.
