Word documents growth

Diana

I am a network administrator and I have some users Word documents with
pictures inserted into them. These documents are actually a few pages long
but the fact of having pictures caused an enormous growth of these documents,
resulting in a big hard disk waste on the file servers.
I have tried to convert the documents to .pdf and then again to .doc but it
has been useless.
One solution could be to rework all documents replacing the pictures with
resized ones but this would be a job I can't assume, and the user is not
willing to do it either.
Does anybody know about some software to fix these type of documents?

This is a Mac Word group. Are there Macs involved here? I'm going to
assume not---you should repost in the general Word newsgroups:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx

When you repost, be sure to give version numbers and mention some sample
document sizes, how many pictures, etc--give more detail so that people
can figure out what is actually making the documents large enough to
trouble server space.

Hi Diana:

If you are using PC Word, then you can run up a macro to do this, if your
coding skills are fairly high.

However, the only thing that's going to work "well" is User Education.

You can often "assist" the user education by setting storage quotes for each
user with a system management utility that sends a message that says "You
have exceeded your disk quote. The oldest documents will be deleted
tonight." :)

Cheers

If it is PC Word, have you tried the compression feature? You don't mention
version, but in 2003 for example, you can go to Format> Picture, click the
Compress button. Use the Print setting (200 dpi) if the doc is to be printed
any time in the future along with the Delete Cropped Areas... Checkbox.
