Word documents open slowly from Explorer

M

Michael Ruane

Hi,
I have a problem with locally stored docs in MS Word 2007. My machine is
running XP Pro SP2. When opening documents from double-clicking in Explorer,
it seems to take longer than usual to open a file. All other ways of opening
a doc work fine. Sometimes the doc will in a timely fashion so its not
related to the docs themselves. The same issue occurs with Excel files.

I've tried re-installing Word but this hasn't worked.
I've disabled any 3rd party add-ins but this hasn't worked.
I've tried re-associating .doc files but this hasn't worked.
I've service packed the office installation to the latest version this
hasn't worked.
I've checked that the .dot file being used for the documents is not
corrupted.

Can anyone help?

Currently, the suspect culprit is DDE. To disable it use the following
steps:

- In an Exploring Window (such as My Computer), click Tools/Folder Options
- Select the File Types tab
- Find your file type, such as (.docx) Word Document or (.xlsx) Excel
Workbook and select it
- Click Advanced
- In the Actions list, select Open and then click Edit
- Deselect DDE
- In the Application Action text box, take a look at the end and if has
/DDE, delete it.
- At the end of the line, type "%1" (include the quotes and add a space
before it if necessary)

If this works then make the same change for the other file types you are
having difficult with.

Unless I made the chanes incorrectly, it made it worse. I then put it back to
original (or so I thought) and .doc files won't open from explorer or outlook
at all. I looked at the .xls extentions open command and duplicated them back
in the .doc extensions dialog box. Either I didn;t do it correctly or it's ot
the answer.

I appreciate your help,

Hi Cindy,

Are the files on your local drive or on a network drive?

Are there any mapped network drives that are not available or listed as 'Disconnected' under my computer? Those can cause a delay
in some cases.

If those aren't a problem, delete the .doc file type association then use

Start=>Run
Winword.exe /r

to recreate it and see what it now says.

The files are on my local c drive.
No mapped drives in this case

I'm not quite as computer savvy as to understand what you're suggesting
below. I don't know how to delete the .doc file type association and frankly
- that seems scary!

I apreciate your response, but am ont sure what to so with it.
