Word documents opening in Note Pad

All of a sudden all of my Word documents have ended up with Note Pad
formatting and whenever I try and open what was previously a Word document,
it opens in Note Pad. Why did this happen and is there an easy fix?

From Start, Run type in

winword /r

and press enter. That will reregister Word in Windows correctly.

That seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks much! For my own edification,
why did this happen in the first place?

I wish I knew! It has never happened to me, but judging by the number of
times reregistering sorts out this and similar problems, it happens
frequently.
