word documents read use only

I configured read permssions on a network share for user A, and modify
permissions for user B. There are some winword documents on this file
share.

It seems when user A opens a word document, user B can't edit this
particular file until user A closes it. What can i do?

Nothing. It's supposed to be like that. Think about it: What if they
both open it, edit it, and save it: Which version ends up saved?
Windows or Word do not compare the file it is about to save with the
file on disk and saves the changes only.

These kind of things need to be addressed through real life policies
and agreements.

Hm just read your question again, and it's more valid then I thought,
sorry about that. Unfortunately, it doesnt change my answer, as far as
I know you can't do anything about it... The one who opens the file
first has the permissions on that file.
