Word documents that want to open a server connection

Steve Y

Hi all,

I'm trying to troubleshoot a situation where a user of Word X opens a
certain .doc file, and receives a server authentication dialog,
starting a connection to an AFP server on the local network. The
connection dialog will present itself, can be canceled, and then
presents itself again, and can be cancelled.

After the 2nd cancel, everything proceeds as normal. The server
doesn't have to mount, and nothing can be found wrong with the
document, so it's not missing a linked image. No, it's not a horrible
bug, but annoying.

Is there a way to ask Word "what do you think is out there?", and to
get it to stop looking for it?

Thanks,

Steve.

Hi Steve:

The first two things I would expect are "The Printer" and "The Attached
Template".

Word looks for the last used instance of both of those on Document Open.

Having gotten the document open, use Tools>Templates and Addins to "Attach"
a local version of the correct template. Then use File>Print... to format
the document for a local printer.

Then SAVE the document.

It should stop waving semaphores after that.

BTW: "No" there is no easy way to discover what it is looking for, without
opening a spy bug like tcpflow on the network...

Cheers

Hi John,

I'm afraid it still waves semaphores.

I've attached a local template, printed, saved, restarted, and it
still wants a server share connection. I sniffed the connection with
tcpflow, but all that tells me is that a connection is opened, but now
what to.....

Regards,
Steve.

Hi Steve:

If we can determine the file name of the resource it is opening the
connection to look for, we would be able to solve the problem. Can you?

Cheers
