Word documents

If I am in Word and try to open a file my computer goes into a loop and when it returns minutes later what I get is the screen to choose a saved file that seems to go on forever laterally and since the program is unresponsive I can't open stored files! The way I get around it is by opening my documents file outside of Word and double clicking the desired file. Not acceptable. Any help would be appreciated. (I have tried reloading Word and that did not seem to help).

Hi Bruce -

The first thing is that reinstalling Office *rarely* solves a problem on a
Mac and even then only if the proper Uninstall is done first.

As to your current situation: Have you run the Repair Disk Permissions
utility recently? I'd suggest you do so, then restart your Mac. What you're
experiencing could be either Word related or OS related or a combination of
both.

Unfortunately you haven't provided enough info for anything further just
yet. We have nothing more to go on than what you tell us, & right now there
are more than 3 different versions of Office & 3 different versions of OS X
in widespread use. Each combination presents different circumstances.

You need to include (in any inquiry):

What version - specific - of Word,
What specific version of OS X
Is this something that just started - if so what else might have been
changed around the same time?
Are there only certain docs/folders involved or is this with all files?
