Word does not allow me to highlight text using Shift Arrows. Unfortunately, I
lack the digital dexterity to use the mouse for this purpose. When I press
Shift-Arrow-right, the whole paragraph moves right instead of highlighting
desired text. This makes the huge volumn of writing I must do very slow. I
NEED TO CORRECT this defect. I have tried "Open and repair" to no avail. This
only occures in Word (ver. 2003) H E L P !

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options, clear the
check box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces." Also,
The shortcut you need is Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow. I suspect you are using
Alt+Shift+Right Arrow, which does demote text. You might also want to
explore the Accessibility Options in Windows Control Panel or adjust the
mouse sensitivity in Control Panel | Mouse.

I don't think that 'Set Indent...' option has anything to do with the
problem. (Using Word 2003), Shift+Right Arrow selects character at a time,
Ctrol+Shift+Rt Arrow select Word at a time. AFAICT, shift+Rt Arrow should
work regardless of 'Set Indent' setting.

Hi TT

Check to see what the command Shift+Right Arrow key is set to on your
computer. Open Word and right-click on any Toolbar and select Customise.
Click on Keyboard button at the bottom of the dialog and then click in the
Press New Shortcut key box and enter Shift+ Right Arrow. The result should
say 'assigned to CharRightExtend'. What does yours report?

It didn't seem to me that that option made any difference, either, but I
thought it might be part of the problem. And yes, Shift+Right Arrow does
select one character at a time; I just figured the OP wanted to do more than
that. Since I never select text that way, I'm kind of clueless about it. The
OP might do better to use the Extend option.

I understand. I too rarely use more than Shift+Down Arrow key for quickly
selecting (line by line) to the end of a short paragraph: but otherwise
don't use arrow keys either.

If Tranquil Tantrums is interested in an alternative keyboard-centered
system of running basic editing, selecting, and navigating commands that
is much easier on the hands than Word's way, he should let me know, and
I'll share my system with him.

Will he also get "Larry's strange oddities and encounters never
witnessed before in Word"? <GRIN>

I'm teasing, of course, but you have to agree - you really come up
with some strange problems! ;-)
