Word does not create a hyperlink

Jon

I was working with a number of technically knotty files, and a curious thing
happened. Now my Word application cannot create a hyperlink. Instead, it just
tells me what the command is:

HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]"

Similarly, the Word application does not form checkboxes or merge fields.
Instead, it just tells me what the commands are:

FORMCHECKBOX

MERGEFIELD

Does anybody know how to fix this bug?

Your options are set to display the field codes instead of the field
results. Just press Alt+F9 to toggle them the other way. (This is the
shortcut for going to Tools > Options > View and checking/unchecking
the Field Codes box.)

Hi Jon,

If you use Alt+F9 in that document does the display switch back to field results rather than field contents?

Each of those items is a Word field.
