How are you attempting to open the files?:

Dbl-Click in a Finder window,
Control/Right+Click in Finder, choose Open With> Word,
Use File> Open from within Word

Indicate exactly what happens with each of those methods.

Also:

Is this *all* files or just certain ones?
What is the source & filename extension of the problem files?
What is the nature of the content the files should have?
Specs for your Mac?

Hi Bob, Thanks. The problem occurs when I go to: Word / File / Open. There is a delay and the screen shows a number of empty columns with a box at the bottom saying Enable with the default choice All Office Documents. Clicking this results in another delay and no response. I have to Force Quit Word to get the system back.

If I go to the disk, select Documents, and then click to open a file, it opens normally.

The file type I am trying to open is .doc

Excel and Power Point open files normally.

I'm having exactly the same issue. When using File - Open, I get a window with a number of columns. There is a button at the bottom that says "Enable" and has the default "All Office Documents". At the same time, the process
/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Support/LaunchCFMApp /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word

is consuming essentially all of the CPU.

I'm running Office 2004 version 11.5 and OS X 10.5.4.

Any ideas?

Your description of the Open dialog suggests that there is an OS X problem
that needs resolution. The first thing I'd do is shut the system down for a
few minutes. When you start it up run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions
& see if the problem continues. If it does...

Use this link to the Apple downloads site to retrieve the OS X 10.5.4 COMBO
Update [yeah, I noticed you're at 10.5.4 already, but trust me :)] plus any
hardware/firmware updates that have been posted for your breed of Mac.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

Once you've applied those, repair permissions again & reply with your
results.

Well, let's think about this... You're using a completely different version
of Office (2004 - binary as opposed to 2008 - Universal). How - exactly -
are you having the *same* issue?

You may be experiencing similar symptoms but it's a totally different
issue... And should have been posted as a separate message rather than being
"tacked on" to someone else's thread. If the issue *is* the same follow the
advice given to the OP - it does nobody any good to simply throw in a "me,
too" post. If the solution doesn't work or doesn't apply it means your issue
is different in some way & should be submitted separately. Please keep that
in mind for the future :)

The first factor is that you're an update behind for Office. Get the 11.5.1
update applied, repair disk permissions & if that doesn't resolve it post
back in a NEW message stating your particulars & identity.

Hi Bob, I shut down, then after restart, ran repair and verify utility with no change to initial symptoms. I will now try to download and reinstall OSX from the link. (Ugh!)

Hi Bob, I downloaded and installed the newest 9-15-08, 10.5.5 combined (610mb) software and then ran repair permission and repair disk with no difficulty.

The problem remains as previously described. What next?

Trashing the plist file fixed it for me. Thanks!

For the issue as described in this post, try #5 here: <http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Word2008Issues.html#FileOpen>
