Hi

I have a Brother laser printer HL-5150D and Office 2008 version 12.1.2. Of late when I try to print a word document the print screen opens, the beach ball spins and nothing happens. I can only get out by using the 'Force Quit' option.

I am using OSX 10.5.4

Has any one else experienced this? Does any one have any suggestions to overcome it?

Check the Brother site for an updated printer driver, apply it if there is
one then repair disk permissions.

The only driver on the Brother site is for OSX 10.4.

After doing a repair disc permissions and restart there was no change, Word becomes unresponsive and nothing further occurs.

Are you able to print with this printer using other software?
Are you able to print a TEST page using the printers own software?
Have you tried re-installing the printer software/drivers?

See Paul's reply & if that doesn't work you'll need to beat up on Brother.

Applications don't do the printing, they simply notify the OS that something
needs to be printed. It's then up to the OS & the printer driver to get the
job done. In your case one or the other is dropping the ball.

I can print OK PDF files iWork files and even excel files, it is just Word that my printer does not seem to like although it will print an older word document without trouble. If I try to print a more complex document containing a number of individual bordered text and tick boxes then Word stops responding.

Hi Dale,
This printer is quite old, in Printer terms, and if it only has basic
in-built memory it may be struggling to cope with the complicated Word
documents you are trying to print, especially as you said it can cope with
older, and I presume less complicated, Word documents.

What happens if you attempt to print one of these new Word documents, BUT
leave Word to work away for 30 mins. Does it print? Or does Word stop
responding?

Hi Welsh Gas

Yes the printer is a little long in the tooth however it handled the same document without any problems before the upgrade to Word:mac 2008 (I am running v12.1.2) I have an associated problem with the printer in that where it previously duplex printed A4 documents without problems, now it will not do so unless I change the paper size setting to US Letter.(doesn't matter whether it is a Word file, PDF or web page) This last problem was occurring before the upgrade to Word:mac 2008 and appeared during the later stages of upgrades to OSX 10.4

Leaving the printer and Word to their own devices for over an hour makes no difference, Word still does not respond

Dale.

It makes no difference how well the document printed using Tiger, Office
2004 & the appropriate drivers. There have been a lot of changes to both the
OS & the software. If the right device driver isn't installed you're wasting
your time chasing symptoms :)

Hi Dale,
Here is the lowdown on the 10.5 driver. As Cybertaz states, the latest
drivers are on the Leopard installation disk.
Look up your printer here:- http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/macosxstate.htm
And follow the link. It explains how to load the drivers.
Let us know if this fixes your problem.

Thanks guys

Unfortunately doing a clean re install made no difference at all. I even tried both the cups driver and the BR-script3 driver to no avail.

the hardware!

Yes I am beginning to think that a new printer might be the way to go.

Ah well its only money ;-(

Cheers to all who tried to help

Unless you're just using this as an excuse to get a fancy new printer ;-)
you might contact Brother Support directly. They may be able to provide a
solution - for example, sometimes the driver for a different model works.
