Word does not save file while it says saving...

Sharad Rai

Hi,

We have wireless network in our school. I have seen a
problem with Word XP that when the workstations looses
connectivity and no shared mapped drives are accessible,
it says the network connectivity is lost and the document
is being saved.

But after restarting the machine when try to access the
same file from the network drive, the same old file
appears with no new updates.

OK I see there is a logic that how can a file be saved
when no network drive exists, but my question is why is
Word giving vague messages saying file is saved when it
has not been able to save it. Remember not all of the
users are IT Pros to save the file in an alternate
location just in case.

What is the solution to fix this problem in future??

IS it a BUG?

Thanks a lot,
Sharad

Thanks for your reply, but I was not looking for this
answer.

Network and applications are two different entities. They
should be perfect in their own realms. The simple issue
that I have raised herer is why WORD is saying "file
saved" when it has... Our WiFi network is stable and
steady and is up for 99.999% so I don't think I should
look more into my network problem.

I don't have XP version but in 2000 the file is saved on the local drive
when the "network fails". So the file IS saved and the "user" will need
to be advised to look on the local drive if network files are saved
while the network is unavailable.

But I searched the entire C: drive (that's the only drive
we have on that PC) but no trace of that file. any idea?

I can't test XP, but if you open a network file, break the "network
connection" make a change, and do a save what does the system respond with.

Hi Sharad,

Can you expand on what you mean by: WORD is saying "file saved"?

Word doesn't tell you a file is saved. If you are referring to seeing
"Saving AutoRecovery Information" in the status bar then that is not
the same as a File/Save. Word doesn't automatically save changes.
