Word Doesn't Load and locks up computer

I have a Gateway system, Millenium, 880 mhz, 20 gig hard drive, 128 mg
memory. When I try to load Word 2000 from the desktop shortcut, the computer
locks up. Sometimes a message comes up saying the system is dangerously low
in resources. I don't have any other programs open. The system ran okay
until a couple of days ago. All other programs seem to work okay. I am able
to open Word from within the Works package, but what a bother!! Any
suggestions? Thanks for all the help I have received in the past and now.
