Word doesn't recognize my printer

C

Cdrmac

I am using OSX 10.3.5, MS Office X, I have two accounts setup., one for
me(admin) and one for my Granddaughters. I cannot print from my
account. The printer is not recognized. I can print from all other
apps.
In my Granddaughters account, Word prints normally.
Any Suggenstions?

Word picks up the printer from the operating system. Go to System
Preferences:printers and Faxes and click Setup Printers...

Did that, also removed and re-installed print drivers. No change

I'm struggling here...

I would run Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions from first the good
account, and then again from the bad one.

Note that you must reboot your system for the changes to take hold. So this
might be a good time to delete the MS Office Preferences files as explained
here: http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DamagedPrefs.htm. Word will rebuild
it at next startup.

Cheers

This could a problem with you're Normal.dot file.

You can check by:

1. Quitting Word
2. Search for "Normal.dot"
3. Locate it and rename it to "NormalOLD.dot" (or anything else)
4. Launch, Word again, and try to print.

If that doesn't work, you could also try Printing a document from your Admin
Account, that was successfully printed on one of your other accounts. Then
post back and let us know if that worked or not.

Thanks

Just a small thing - Jeffery's response says to search for the "Normal.dot"
file. On my 10.3.6 system with Office 2004, the file is called "Normal" and
is in the users "/Documents/Microsoft User Data" folder. (I presume this is
the default?). Searching for "Normal.dot" using the Finder "Find" command
may not find this filename.

Yup. "Normal.dot" is the WinWord default template. MacWord's is just
plain "Normal".

Hi Rudy,

Yes, that's the default location for the Normal template in Office 2004.
The ".dot" extension denotes a template, but you're correct that searching
for Normal.dot in the Finder won't turn up the file. Unfortunately, the
modern Mac doesn't use file extensions automatically. We'll have to
remember this when referring to the Normal template in the future.

Thanks!

You can turn on the ability to use extensions. in system I've forgot
exactly how to do so but. since I send files, and receive files from
Windows folks I have to.

The "modern Mac" *does* use file extensions automatically, for almost
everything. The extension-optional MacOS file system is rather uneasily
grafted on. But it's the "modern MacOffice" that can't handle a little
bit of ambiguity...
We'll have to remember this when referring to the Normal template in
the future.

OTOH, some of us never learned "Normal.dot" until we were dragged
kicking and screaming to the dark side. So "Normal" seems, well, normal,
and adding an extension, as in "Normal.dot", still seems slightly dotty.

J

John McGhie

Hi Jeffrey:

It's not YOUR slip :) For reasons known only to the guys who coded this,
Mac Word will not recognise the Normal template if it has a file extension.

I suspect they did it on purpose, with malice aforethought, to prevent ME
from sharing my Normal between PC and Mac.

As a representative of the World's "I wanna share my templates" user group,
which currently is known to have a membership of at least "1", I protested
loudly, and was ignored, during the beta...

Cheers
