Word doesn't refresh read only documents even if changed in the f.

I am creating model documents that i put in read only so that i am sure that
it is not possible to overide them when editing them for real use.

Sometimesi want to make changes to the model to improve it. I thus open it,
edit it and try to save it. Of course it doesn't work since the document is
read only. This is why i open explorer to edit the read-only state of this
file.

the problem is that word doesn't refresh the state of the file, thus making
it impossible for me to save the file, even if it is not read only anymore.

Also note that, even if i close word and restart it, the state of the file
is still saved...

This should be modified a little ;-)

thank you in advance,

You would not have this problem if you would create true templates (.dot
files) and place them in a template folder instead of trying to use
documents as templates.

First, take to heart what Suzanne has said. You almost certainly should be
using templates rather than reusing documents. For more on the different
kinds of templates, tabs on the file new dialog, and locations of templates
folders see http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.

Second, when you need to save a changed document that has been opened in
read-only status, you can not change the status of the open document. You
need to use Save-As and save the edited document to a different name or
location. Then close the document and in Windows you can copy the new
document over the old one.

Are you, by chance, someone who has converted from Word Perfect? In Word
Perfect the usual practice is to reuse changed documents; in Word using
templates to create new documents is much better practice.

Along with Suzanne's advice, to use a template instead of trying to
use a document as a template, you should have more success if you
remove the Windows file attribute use the "Read only recommended"
option found under Tools/Options/Security or Save depending on the
version of Word you are using.

This option will allow you to select whether you want to open as read
only upon opening the document.
