Word doesn't respond to Keyboard viewer

I have the occasional need to type Greek text in documents that are
otherwise primarily English. The instructions in Help seem quite simple
and straightforward:

1. Go to System Preferences
2. Click on Input Menu tab
3. Check box alongside language of choice
4. Ensure that Keyboard Viewer is displayed in the dropdown menu of the
Menu Bar (Check the appropriate box for this)

.... and Bob's your aunty! Well no, not quite.

Having done all of the above, the Greek text certainly appeared in my
document (when the appropriate icon was selected in the Input Menu
displayed on the Menu Bar), but the Keyboard Viewer which I also
selected, was headed Keyboard Viewer (U.S.). Not a Greek character in
sight. Interestingly even when I have my Aussie flag selected in the
Menu Bar, the Keyboard Viewer is still labelled (U.S.). Now all this
only happens when I have the insertion point in a Word document (I am
working in Office 2004 for Mac). If I click outside the document i.e.
on the desk top or in a folder window, the Keyboard Viewer changes to
the language indicated in the Menu Bar.

To me, this suggests that the problem lies in the Word for Mac program.

If no one knows how to fix the problem, perhaps someone can suggest
where best to find out.

Well that's because it's not the keyboard viewer you need... It's the
character palette....

The viewer is only to show you how to use modifier keys to get to
special characters.
The Character palette allows you to see all the characters contained in
your fonts. Once you have selected the one you want, you can either drag
and drop it or even double-click it to insert it at the insertion point
in the frontmost document,
