Word drop box disappears

the top menu as in 'Home , Insert, Page layout etc' disappears after i press
a button on the options. For example to underline or bold a sentence i must
press home first then the bold button and the whole menu disappears and to
the underline i must again press menu first and then underline and afterwards
it disappears again.
How do i fix it so that the menu stays there like it used to?
