Word - drop down menu failure on files

Can anyone help with this problem?

As of yesterday the drop down menu prior to opening a
specific file does not function i.e. if I go into one of
my folders and highlight a particular file to
delete/open/rename it, etc. the egg-timer shows that it is
trying to provide the drop down menu to enable me to
choose one of these options, but nothing happens.

Any assistance appreciated.
