Word /Endnote incompatibility

Amy Riley

I am running Word X on Mac OS 10.2.8 - and trying to use
the CWYW feature in Endnote 7. Several things happen -
1) the display blips ( this only occurs with this
combination of programs - and is not dependent on a
specific Mac computer)
2) Word starts crashing - over time -
3) It does not help to copy the document into a new file

Any ideas????

EndNote's CWYW add-in is notorious for causing problems in all versions....

Some people say that turning off Instant Formatting has solved problems with
EN 7. Try that, although others have had to entirely remove the CWYW
templates from the Apps/Office/Office/Startup/Word folder.

Make sure your Word X is updated, as that might help with the display and
crashing:

If this only happens with a specific doc, and you think it might be
corrupted, then the first way to check for a corrupt document is to
copy the entire thing, *excluding* the last paragraph mark, into a new
document. That last paragraph mark holds a lot of information which can get
corrupted, and copying the text into a document with a fresh one keeps your
formatting, but can fix some glitches.

A paragraph mark is a gray ¶. Click on ¶ on the standard toolbar to show
nonprinting characters, including paragraph marks.

PS. If you have to remove the CWYW add-ins, you can still use EN to scan
the doc in RTF format to format the notes (I'm not sure whether the doc
needs to be in RTF format, the EN site appears to say so but I don't see
why, but haven't taken the time to test it yet).

OR, though I haven't tested this extensively myself, you can drag and drop
the EN fields into the Word doc without the CWYW add-in being installed. If
Word is usable but glitchy with CWYW installed, it might be possible to only
install it for long enough to format the doc, then uninstall it. This would
be annoying, but possibly less annoying than RTF, and some simple
AppleScripts could help automate the process of quitting word, moving the
CWYW files, reopening word, formatting the doc, quitting word, moving the
files.

I simply use copy and paste and I find that tremendously easier...

Anyway, as far as stability is concerned, youcan also go to your pref folder
and delete the Carbon Registration Database from the Microsoft folder there.
It will be recreated automatically.
The EndNote add-in use VBA and VBA in Word make the app crash whenever the
CRD is corrupted (and if your user folder is not on the boot drivbe, it gets
corrupted all the time but there is a workaround).
