Open Equation Editor and click on Style > Define. These styles
MUST be set to Symbol font: L.C. Greek, U.C. Greek, & Symbol.

I have a similar problem. I had those fonts in Powerpoint as well, but there
I solved the problem. Now I have a word document with formulae, and only some
of them show appropriately. The others show in a box with gray background and
display "Error!". When I right-click them and choose "toggle field" I get
s.th. like {EQ ...}
I tried setting those UC Greek & all to symbol, didn't solve my problem
though.

Check that the EE has the correct fonts applied. See this FAQ for details:

Thanx for the quick reply. That was unfortunately not the issue. Maybe I
should mention that I had the same problem in Office XP, now I have Office
2003.

I suggest that you take this problem to the Design Science support site (the
EE is actually a cut down version of MathType) and you'll find support at
http://www.dessci.com . Their support guy is usually very good.

I have a similar problem. I had those fonts in Powerpoint as
well, but there I solved the problem. Now I have a word
document
with formulae, and only some of them show appropriately. The
others show in a box with gray background and display "Error!".
When I right-click them and choose "toggle field" I get
s.th. like {EQ ...}

The only thing that should cause the gray background is your Word
Option settings. In Word, click on Tools > Options, and in the
View tab, "Field shading" should be set to "Never". Now, I don't
know about the "Error!" part you spoke of, but tell me what
happens when you single-click on one of the offending equations
-- what does the Status Bar say (the bottom of the Word window)?
It should say something like "Double-click to Edit Microsoft
Equation 3.0".

I have the same problem but I don't have the font Symbol!! I found that
another one, Euclid Symbol was being used... where can I re-install my fonts?
If that's the problem.
