Word/Excel 2003 linking

S

Sally

I had Office 2000 installed and could link Excel spreadsheets to Word docs
and the link worked fine. I upgraded to 2003 and although I can still link
as above, I cannot edit through the link. Get message saying "word cannot
open the document. User does not have access privileges" when I try to edit
the spreadsheet. I am the only user and have not adjusted any settings.
Please advise.

Office 2003 links to its data in a different manner. From the Tools menu in
Word, select Options and then go to the General tab and check the box
against the "Confirm conversions at open" item. Then when
you attach the data source to the mail merge main document, you will be
given the option of using the older DDE method of connection. You may also
consider using the old Excel filter which is linked from the downloads page
of my web site.

Thanks for your input. I have tried both these solutions and neither of them
has worked as still having exactly the same problem! Do you have any further
ideas or suggestions that I could try? I have also uninstalled and
reinstalled both 2000 and 2003 upgrade.

If you are running Norton AntiVirus, disable its Office Plug-in. It often
causes problems such as this (and loads of others as well).

Thank you for your reply. Please can you tell me how to do this. I cannot see
anything relevant on the Norton Index.

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

5. OK out and close NAV.

Success at last! Thank you for this. I am in South Africa and have just got
up and seen your msg.
