Word, Excel and Outlook not responing on startup

Using XP Pro SP2, Office Basic 2003.
When I start up the PC and then start one of these applications it can take
from 5 to 30 minutes for the application to start. In the case of Word, the
program appears to start up, but I can see in task manager that there are 2
copies of the program running, both trying to open document 1 and both
showing as 'not responding'. After a period of time, one of these instances
will close and the other will now show as 'running' and the program will run
as normal. If I close this program and then re-open it or Excel or Outlook,
it will respond normally. The problem only appears to happen when the first
office application is opened for the first time. I have tried running 'detect
and repair', deleting the normal template and emptying the temp folder, all
of which have been suggested as cures. I have also tried running winword with
the /a switch, but this deos not cure the problem. Help!!

Sorry for delay. The person to whom this PC belongs was away.

In answer to the question, yes it starts normally.

Then something that is loading during the normal boot is causing the problem
Use msconfig to disable all startups, reboot, excepting the prompt, then
retest
If ok its a question of msconfig again and re enabling a batch of startups,
to reboot & retest, repeated untill you find the one causing the issue.
Allthough if you have antivirus software installed, you could simply try
uninstalling that, reboot and see if the issue goes away. If so either
change your AV or reinstall it without the Office or Outlook intergration
