Word, Excel behavior

When in Word or Excel, I experience frequent delays of a
few seconds each, during which the hourglass appears at
the cursor. I can't determine what the program is
doing. Keystrokes are lost because of this. Any ideas?

John,

It is probably saving auto-recovery data, which is used the
recreate the file if Excel crashes. You can disable this by going
to the Tools menu, choosing Options then the Save tab.
