Word/Excel files no longer recognized

My electric went out and turned off my computer. When I turned it back on, I
found that while I could open my Microsoft Office 2000 programs, all of the
files no longer show the Word/Excel type of icon. Instead they show a text
or WordPad type icon. The document will open in Microsoft; however, if I am
in Windows Explorer for instance, it states that it cannot find the program
and it will automatically open into WordPad or not at all.

How do I fix this? Do I need to re-install Microsoft Office?

Thanks for any help you may have.

I think reinstall MS Office is the best choice. If you still can't open
some word/excel files, they maybe damaged. Then you may need to try some
tools. I have used a tool called 'Advanced Excel Repair'
(http://www.datanumen.com/aer/) to repair many corrupt Excel xls files
on my damaged disks successfully. I'm not sure whether it still works
your files. Maybe you can try in the end.
