Word/Excel Hanging

I have a couple of compaq Evo D510 PCs, which are running XP SP2 with Office
XP. Since yesterday everytime I go to save or open a document in word or
excel, the hour glass appears and then nothing happens.

I did some research on the web and tracked it down to windows updates. The
update that caused the problem is KB908531. When I removed this the machines
started to work normally again. I have turned automatic updates off as I
don't need this problem to occur again.

Any ideas on whether there is a fix for this or not? I do not want to leave
auto updates off

This seems to be happening more than MS is aware. There have been 4
different posts on this today. These links should help you fix it.

Carey Frisch's answer to a different post would probably be the answer to
this also.

to download a simple registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
