Word, Excel Open Dialog box - Scroll and search problems

A

Anthony Osborne

Hi there.

I have a problem on XP machines running Office2k. When a
user uses the Open dialog box to open a file and they
start typing a file name, the dialog box doesn't scroll
to the first letter that they typed (ie scroll to
first "s" word) and it doesn't always find the file they
are typing in.

Let's say they have 5 "s" files and the first is "sam"
and the next "scare", "set" and so on, it might
find "scare" but not "sam" It doesn't start
alphabetically. And sometimes it doesn't find any files
for the first letter. I have 5 files that start with "m"
but when I type "m" there's no autocomplete.

They are telling me that on a 98 pc it used to scroll to
the "s" files. I've not tested this.

The files are on a Novell server and I've tried local
files on an XP machine and it seems to find all the files
but still doesn't scroll. Maybe the local files are
indexed and the Novell server's are not...?

Any ideas?

Thanks

This is what can be found in Word Help about your problem.

Turn off automatic completion of file names and URLs
By using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later, you can turn
off the feature in Microsoft Office and in Internet Explorer that
automatically suggests a match for file names and URLs as you type them.
This setting affects two places in the Office applications: The Insert
Hyperlink and File Open dialog boxes. This also turns off automatic
completion of URLs in Internet Explorer.

Start or switch to Internet Explorer.

Do one of the following:
If you have Internet Explorer 4.0, click Internet Options on the View
menu, and then click the Advanced tab.

If you have Internet Explorer 5, click Internet Options on the Tools
menu, and then click the Advanced tab.

Do one of the following:
If you have Internet Explorer 4.0, clear the Use AutoComplete check box.

If you have Internet Explorer 5, clear the Use inline AutoComplete in
integrated shell check box.
