Word/Excel Save as Locks up? Remove Security Update

C

Cosmo Boolean

I spent the weekend fixing several users systems with this problem.

In all cases the users downloaded and installed a Microsoft security
update from around 4-15-06.

Recommended FIX : Remove the security updates.

control panel, add/remove software, click on show updates box, scroll
down to the latest security updates, look for the dates around 4-15-06,
remove them, restart the computer.

The files should behave the same as before the update install.

I also suggest disabling the auto update until this is resolved.

The replies on theis subject from Microsoft suggest editing the
registry files. "Not a good idea for the inexperienced."

Microsift needs to reissue a security update that fixes this problem.
Hopefully Microsoft will test it using their widely used programs
first.

This error will impact a lot of users until Microsoft releases a fix.

Regards!

They are re-releasing the update as you can see in this well-worn
response (of mine, not MS)

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015 (15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015
Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx has
been revised to v1.2 to reflect the issues in KB918165.
From the FAQ section:
"On Tuesday, April 25, Microsoft will issue a targeted re-release of
the MS06-015 update."

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.
