word experienced a problem try to open the file

I saved files in work using office 2000. I am trying to open the documents
in office 2003 word and get the error message: Word experienced an error
trying to open the file. Check file permission for document or drive. Make
sure there is enough memory. Open the file with text recovery converter. I
have plenty of memory. File recovery won't open. Can not open file to change
permission. So NOW WHAT? This is my resume!

Try using the Open and Repair choice in the File Open dialog (click the
arrow beside Open).

I'm suffering from the same problem - Word 2000 SP3 on XPH SP3

In Word 2000, there isn't even the mentionned Repair option.

On opening some *.doc files from Word, I occasionally get the message:
"Error on accessing this link - this file might not be a link."
(retranslated from German)

And this is exactly the problem: the file type in the Open box is given as
"link".
Trying to open the same file from Total Commander, it opens in Word without
any problem.

Right click on the file name in the Open box produces the above message, and
ok-ing the message opens the properties dialog and there the file type is
suitably given as "Microsoft Word Document"

So we know the culprit: Word in its own Open dialog gives the wrong file
type and after that doesn't recognize its own file - or rather, it assigns
the wrong file type already on saving.

BTW. the same occasionally happens when opening a recent file from the drop
down last files list in Word.

What ist peculiar that there is no recognizable reason or set of
circumstances for Word to do so - occasionally.

But it definitely is a Word saving process bug - what do do?
Is there a way to change the assigned file type?

I say thanks and hope to get the clever answer delivered too...
Kind regards

If Total Commander is some kind of document management system, then I
suspect you're meant to be using it.

TC is just a 2 panes Windows Explorer replacement me and many people are
keen on and need not have any relevance to present problem - but wait - could
it depend on whether TC is running or not?? Have to find out.

Question to stuckwitherror: do you use TC??

What is TC? Have a look at www.ghisler.com/

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm
It says:

1. Click Start | Run (bottom- left corner of your screen).
2. In the “Open“ box, type:
winword /r
and press Enter. Note that there is a space before the forward slash
