word external links disable

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable automatic links update when
opening a Word document with automation? It seems like it always happens
when 'automatic links update' is checked in the document, and cannot be
disabled.

If you change the setting in Tools/Options/General about checking links on
open, does that make any difference?

Also, which version of Word is this?
