word fails to start correctly

I tried to fax a word document (unsucsessfully) including converting to .pdf.
Now when I click on a .doc file, Word starts with a message "Microsoft Word
has encountered a problem and needs to close." There is a box checked which
says "Recover my work and restart Microsoft Word".
After I hit "Send" or "Don't Send" error report, it says "Recovering your
documents"

Then it comes up "Word failed to start correctly last time." Do I want to
start in the Safe mode?
If I say "No", it goes throught the whole cycle again.
If I say "Yes", it opens without the document. I have to search the
directory tree to find my document.
I tried "repair" - no change. I tried removing Office and reinsatlling -
same problem.
What is wrong and how can I fix it?

I failed to see anything on this link regarding "orphan word temporary files"
As this post is 3 years old I wondered if the page referred is no longer up.
I am having this exact same problem and trying to find a fix. If you are
still getting replies can you please let me know if you remember what the
solution was.
Thanks,
