Word File Associatons

When I go to a command prompt and type in assoc .doc I get .doc=word.document.8 I also get the same thing with excel. I'm running Windows XP with Office XP and I don't have Word 97 loaded on my machine. Is the .doc file supposed to be associated with wor.document.10?
