Word file cannot be opened from desktop

Has anyone run across this behavior AND the fix?

Double-clicking a saved WORD doc on the desktop (Tiger) produces a
dialog box:

"The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred.
(error Code -10660)" [OK]

Opening the doc from within the application is fine. Any help or ideas
is appreciated! Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Not sure what's causing that, but try this: Click once on the Word doc to
select it and do a Get Info (Cmd>i). In the "Open With" dialog, navigate to
and select Microsoft Word 2004 (I assume that's your version?). Then click
"Change All" and say yes to any other dialogs that might pop up. Does that
do it?

Hi, Beth,

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I tried it late last night but the
problem persisted. Get Info showed the Open With correctly set to Word
2004. Then someone I'd asked about this called and told me to check
Trash to see if I'd deleted the Office Test Drive version, and if not,
to do so. They speculated there could be some kind of conflict or
issue. I did find the Test Drive version I'd Trashed before installing
MS Office 2004, emptied Trash, and was then able to open the Word file
by double-clicking it.

Sure appreciate the suggestion, though! Thanks again.

Thanks for reporting back, Steve. Glad you got it fixed. Amazing, isn't
it, how such a little thing has so great an impact :).

Hi Steve- I'm having this same problem still, but on an eMac running OS
10.3.9.
I had MS Office 2004 installed first and had the problem, then
downgraded to Office X but the problem persisted.
I first found the problem because Word documents received as
attachments in Entourage would not open up from within Entourage
either, unless MS Word was already open.

Certainly a strange one which I would like to get to the bottom of.

Just a recap-
- Can't open MS Word docs from within Entourage (when they're attached
to emails)
- Cannot drag them out onto desktop and open from within the Finder-
receive error code "10660"

CAN open them if I open MS Word first and then double click.
- Problems exists with Office 2004 and Office X.

Perhaps Office 2004 introduces the problem?

Hi Mac Tech:

May seem too obvious, but ince you don't mention having tried it...
When is the last time you Repaired Disk Permissions? Do you leave the
system on overnight (at least occasionally) to allow the CRON routines
to do their thing (or periodically use OnyX or a similar utility)?

This sounds like it could be a symptom of a corrupt Finder database, &
if the above don't resolve the issue you may need to use Disk Warrior
or TechTool Pro to rebuild it.

Thanks for the suggestion CyberTaz. Had repaired permissions and done
lots of other tests.
Anyway, as of this morning the problem disappeared. Quite frustrating
as I may never find out the cause!
