Word File Extensions and Opening Error

D

D

I am having two problems with one of my users Microsoft Word 2000.

1.) The first is the error is "An error occurred and this feature is no
longer functioning properly. Please run Setup and select "Repair..." to
restore this application." This error pops up every time I he opens the
program. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, repairs using the install and
repaired using the detect and repair... so far nothing has worked. Word will
work on my login on his computer, however even giving him a new profile on
his computer it continues to give him the error. I would love a solution but
I would be happy with a new perspective.

2.) The second error is that of file extensions. It started with Word
losing its ability to recognize its own .doc extensions. Instead the user
(his profile only), will see the document with a WordPad icon and it will
open in WordPad. Mind you the document is a .doc. I have tried to right
click open with, however it will not change or stay; along with deleting and
adding the file type back through Tools - Folder Options. I was just
informed today as well, that PDFs have lost their icon but are opening
correctly. Once again I would love a solution, but wouldn't mind a new
perspective.

Thanks very much.

What I had been doing was saving questionable files as HTML to detect
errors, but it's so long since I found one that now forget what I did to
clear them!

OK. Found that on the help menu. It asked for the original CD, which I have.
The installation took far longer than installing other extras I have done in
the past.
At the end of the process it just said 'Installation successfully completed'
(or somesuch). No word of anything detected or repaired.

Then on immediately invoking 'Detect and repair' again, it again accessed
the CD interminably and then simply reported 'Installation successfully
completed'. Still no word of detecting or repairing anything.

And simple questions: Does the facility detect and repair corrupt
documents? (the article says does not repair eg worksheets or templates).
And does it ever report on what's been done (in this case I may have had
nothing to repair)?
