Word File Save box accepts one character only of the file name

I've been using WORD 97 (yes - that old thing !) on Windows XP for many
months quite happily until ............ I must have installed some new prog
with an "updated" DLL or something. Since then whenever I write a new DOC
and come to save it or try to "save as" a new file name, it will put in (I
think) the 1st character it finds in the file and that's it. I can't change
the character its chosen, I can't add more characters. All I can do is to
save it as M.DOC or R.DOC or whatever its chosen and then rename the file
later in Windows Explorer.

I've tried uninstalling WORD and re-installing, but no change.

Any ideas gratefully received !!!!
