Word file shortcut will not open from desktop

If I click on a Word file from my desktop, I get the following error message
but if I open Word and then select the file using the "open file" command,
the file opens... It was working yesterday but is not working on restart
today. Weird. Here is the message I receive:

Windows cannot find ‘C:\Users\VISICOR\Desktop\Name of File.docx’. Make sure
you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Possibly the Word Data key was corrupted when this week's updates were
installed and Word was still running. You need to run Regedit and navigate
to the Key. Whilst DATA is selected, press Delete. Word will create a new
key when it is next restarted.

Word Data Key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Terry... Thank you! I appreciate your reply but unfortunately, this action
is a bit "over my head".... I will try to find someone that can do this for
me. Thanks again!

It's not difficult. Open the Run Dialog (WinKey+R) or use Start and select
RUN. Now type in

regedit

and press enter. That opens the registry editor. Then double-click on each
item which will progressively take you to the Data key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Office
12.0
Word
Then single click on DATA to select it: press your DELETE key.

Close the registry editor and restart Word.

That's a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word has
been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
download that will do this for you. See MSKB 940791
