Word file to big - how to repair?

several word file written in Word2003 have 200+ pages and 5+MByte. Many
screen shots and tables included. Even Word 2003 with SP1 cannot open them. I
did not get error messages when saving the files.

Word stalls when displaying the first page, task manager shows "no response".
My OS in WinXP SP2 German.

Is there a repair tool to for example split the .doc file so I can continue
to work or is my work lost?
