Word files are Overwriting

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC OK. This one has me and entire office completely stumped.

There seems to be some corruption, I believe, occurs when sharing and duplicating word docs. For the most part, all data remains intact, however there are some missing information. Almost have to look for what is missing.

Office procedure: All of these word docs are saved on a server as the master word doc file(s). Each employee will grab the latest version of that file, copy/duplicate that file. The employee will then make revisions as necessary that relate to the specific project.

Background on the files: I believe they were created up to 15 years ago in a word processing program that Macintosh Computers were using at that time. Not sure exactly which ones? Throughout the years there has been additions to the master word doc files and saved as the current version of the word processing program used at that time. I have recently made some additions to the master files and then were saved in MO4Mac2008.

I have noticed some other "interesting" things that occur. For instance, the page numbering preference changes from the master file once duplicated.

Anyone looking into this or knows a solution, THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance.

Thanks,

AC

Sorry: I don't understand. What data is "missing"? I can't see your
screen from here, I need an exact description :)

Cheers

JM-

As far as what "data" is missing, it is actual words/text/formats. After I open original master file, I can see the "data" in that original master file. I duplicate the file, open the copied file, and "data" is missing/changed. I see a common trend mainly of formats that change. As in formats, i mean numbering systems, styles, text fonts, etc.

All I would like to do, is clear (format?) every style, font, numbering system, tabs, etc. and start over. I got a sneaking suspicion that my problem has something to do with templates???? Any clue?

Thanks for helping me.

Have a look in Tools>Templates and Add-ins>Attach...

If "Automatically update styles on open" is checked, that will indeed wipe
out the formatting each time you open the document. That switch is designed
to reset the document formatting to the formatting of the attached template
each time the document opens.

Hope this helps
