word files disapear from server when modified on mac os X

Hi,
Im in the I.t. department for a company that uses both macs and
P.c.'s which the users all save word files to a novell server, and when
we upgraded all the mac users to OSX recently, we started expeirencing
major issues with word files on the server, which were pretty much the
same issues that I've seen on many of discussions on Google groups,
where when you tried to modify a office file, (word excel) on the
server it would create a temporary work file in the directory, and then
when you tried to save come up with a list of errors, and delete the
work file and the actual file . We ran an update on the server which
fixed this issue.
We are now having another issue, where when the OSX (10.2 - 10.4 all
fully updated) user tries to modify a word doc on the server, sometimes
it will make the file dissapear to the OS X user, anyone that does not
use OS X (OS 9 and windows) is able to see the file in the directory.
Sometimes we are able to disconnect the server connection and when we
re-connect the file is visible again, but this does not always work,
but usually re booting the os x machine will fix the issue.
I thought that it might have had something to do with a conversin
issue with windows/mac files, but found out that this also happens to
files that were created on a mac, and again this does not happen all
the time, which is more annoying since it is harder to trouble shoot
the problem.
THanks in advance for your guys' help

Yes, we have heard of that issue. It's not a conversion issue, it's a
locking/unlocking/permissioning/temporary files issue.

I do not remember seeing a cure for it yet.

Just for grins, log one of your "trusted" users on to an account that is the
administrator on the server in question and see how the problem changes. I
suspect it may go away, which will provide fuel for your investigations.

It may well turn out to be something messy such as the Temp file on the
user's local hard drive needing the same account permissioning as the object
file on the server...

Hopefully someone else will have more information...

Cheers
