Word files from Mac show up as strange characters on PC Word 2003

All of a sudden any words files created from my Mac (using Office X) show up
as strange ascii characters in Word 2003 for Windows, even files that looked
fine last week. I have tried deleting the Normal.doc, but that did not
change anything.
