Word files got converted to exe

I am using a windows 98 machine. Now most of my DOC files are added with an EXE extension automatically, after which I am unable to open them. Please help me.

Recommendations:

1. rename the files, removing the *.exe extension. They then should be
able to be opened ... unless of course whatever renamed the files has
damaged/changed the files.
2. find how why the files were renamed. This could be someone at your
office/home, or could be a computer virus, or some other nefarious
person or program. This change was not done "on it's own" by the
operating system.

Are these doc you are downloading from attached files on
e-mails? When you are asked to choose a location to save
go ahead and type in the name of the file you wish to
save with a .doc on the end. Maybe this will prevent
the .exe from being added.
