Word files show as open even when closed

This is a message received in my Helpdesk mailbox:

I am having trouble with Word. When I close a file, it still shows the
file as open. I have had to keep renaming files in order to save the
latest version of a document. I had this problem last week, and even
after I rebooted, it still showed the files I had been in as open

Any ideas?

Sounds like the Windows 2000Server ServicePack 3 used with Office XP bug?
But being bereft of details, it is difficult to really know.
