Word files will not Save...will only Save As

I have some mac Word files sitting on a Win2000 server. I can open
them in Mac Word 2004 on an OS X machine and when I try to Save, I get
the Save As menu. I can overwrite the file and save them but am
immediately prompted to Save As again, I eventually have to cancel the
Save As to get out of the cycle. I have changed the version of Word
these files are created in but they still act the same. I do this all
the time without this problem but there is something different about
this bunch of Word files. If I drag these files to my Mac and open and
Save them, they Save OK. I can drag them back to the Win2000 server
and they will Save OK. Why? Anyone have any ideas?

This makes me suspect that the server is somehowimmediately setting the
file as Read-only.

What version of Word are you running?? Is it up to date (did you apply
the 11.3.5 update?)

Am running Word 11.3. The Get-Info data taken from a Mac of the files
on the server show them to be Read-Write and the server shows the
properties with the Read-Only box unchecked..

two long shots:
1. this sort of behaviour reminds me of a word macro-virus from the
mid 90's. Try quitting word, deleting your normal template, and
reopening. Type and see if you can save and save-as.

2. could be related to your permissions on the server. does word
behave normally when you are editing a file stored locally (not on the
server)?

But when she drags these files to her Mac and open and
Save them, they Save OK. She can drag them back to the Win2000 server
and they will Save OK. Althought I have no better idea, from what it
is said I would not suspect the priviledges on server. Waht about the
network stability? But then the opposite argument would be the same as
with the server priviledges.
