Word files won't open on Vista

Hey, I just got a new laptop with Vista and Office 2007. I tried opening word
files from my university sites and it will not open at all. I keep getting a
message that saying something along the lines of that the address is wrong
and I should try again.
What is causing this and is there a solution?
